My First Photo Pass

Photo of Photo Pass for Billy Talent gig

That was fun. My first gig with a photo pass, and in the pit.

I was asked on Thursday by Nine Lives to shoot their support slot for Billy Talent at the Ambassador.

From what I heard, it’s very rare that an unsigned band like them, used to playing Scout Halls and birthday parties gets picked to play support at a gig like this one.

Previously the biggest crowds Nine Lives had played to were around 300 or so. The Ambassador holds 1250 people, and was sold out last night.

As the gig started, I took my place alongside the security guards in the photo pit between the crowd and the stage. After what the security thought was three songs (but was actually 5, thanks to the band playing a few back-to-back), I got kicked out of the pit. Thankfully, because I had been hanging around with the band before the show, I knew the code for the backstage door, and most of the security guards recognised me. So I went around to the side of the stage, and resumed shooting.

Amazing work Neil. Seriously you should be getting more of these passes for other gigs.
    Nice one.

I agree with Graham’s comment — I particularly like that one with the blue lighting. I would be interested to know what kind of ISO/exposure settings you had the camera set at…

Yep that’s one of my favourites too.

You can see exposure details for each shot on their flickr page. In the right-hand column, it says ‘Taken with a Canon EOS 400D’ If you click ‘More Properties’ below that you’ll see the info.

In general, most of them were at 1/250th, f/1.8 or smaller aperture and they were all at ISO 1600 (I got pretty lucky with noise I think)

    Hi Neil!

    Howdy Mark

Neil, these are fantastic. Brilliant colour, composition, action…I think you’ve found your calling!

Your camera really did do well if these are ISO 1600. My own 10D would never have managed at that setting, the noise levels would have been terrible.
